MBAA Meeting 11/20/07
In attendance: Geoffrey Grimsdick, Paul Zitarelli, Sarah Breen, Chris Pollock, Luke Lee, Tareyn Gilillian, Liza Turley, Anshu Singh, Dan Poston, Jonathan Shaw, Lauren Thompson (visiting)
12:30 – 12:45 - Luke: Int’l Alumni Networking event (gave us a one page hand out)
Weds evening, Jan 16th in the Douglas Forum - Inviting intl alumni and student for a networking event to get tips on how to get a job here, meet alumni who speak their language. A great venue for int’l students who have difficulty with informational interviews. Also a get together night for alumni.
Luke needs help with event planning, contacting alumni, registration/logistics and clean-up
Who will volunteer: Tareyn and Liza on event planning, Chris to help with contacting alumni, others signed up on a sheet that got passed around.
Dan mentioned success with alumni events in Bay Area, having students call individuals directly to invite them ensures they will come. Also consider a value add for the alumni – list other alumni in their class who will be coming as a draw to get others to come.
12:45 – 1:00 pm - Merging of Steffanie and Tareyn’s jobs to two VP of Student Affairs
To make TG prep and LEAD and Graduation week easier for both people
Suggest running as a team during elections, so that they work well together. Jonathan had seen this done in other student organizations.
Jonathan brings up Student Forum idea. In Jan, before elections so that 1st years can learn about the positions. We need to distribute write-ups for all the MBAA positions so that 1st years can learn.
Dan explained that before, Steff and Tareyn’s jobs were always shared, but then in 2004, due to problems with job sharing with many MBAA positions and no one taking responsibility for getting the job done, they made a rule that no positions could be shared. Dan thinks this is a good position to share. Lauren a visiting 1st year, suggests that there be a lead person for each part of the job, but that they share the work. Anshu thinks the job should be shared equally but then have a project lead for each event.
We voted and vote was unanimous in favor of job sharing for the future.
1:00 – 1:15pm - Anshu addresses Lounge issues
Has a question about how to fix something with the monitors. Dan said Ashita knows. Anshu said she did call them, but they didn’t come. Dan said it is her job and Anshu’s job to keep in touch with them to make sure it happens. Tim in BAECC might be able to help with the hardware issues.
Jonathan suggests that the MBAin screen also shows the room number next to each calendar item. Anshu has another idea that will address room number issue.
Will request another CPU, but Dan said the Program Office would like to get a better system that doesn’t need such jerry-rigging to make things work.
Anshu replaced supplies in cubicle, but said they have already been stolen.
Dan said he put in markers too, but others said those ones were “wet-erase” and not “dry-erase”.
Also, Heidi Blair would like to buy plastic forks, knives for the lounge. Anshu says folks should bring their own, Jonathan says MBAA should pay, an inexpensive benefit that the MBAA can provide. Agreed that Heidi will be reimbursed with Lounge funds.
Tareyn would like to do a massive kitchen cleaning before the end of the year, maybe Weds., December 12th. Will involve throwing away lots of things. Anshu suggested sending out an email to all students before letting them know that things will be thrown out.
New fridge plans: Tareyn and Mike have researched buying a new fridge, they have found one on Craig’s list and want to turn the fridge by the windows into a keg fridge. Everyone is in favor. It will be locked. Two other fridges will (one new, one old) be available for student lunches, etc.
Paul brought up dry-erase pen problem in BLM 303. Dan said for the reps to get some from Barby and bring with them to class for when teachers need them.
1:15- 1:20pm – MBAA Interns Jonathan suggests the MBAA officers can set-up meetings with small groups of first years to get their ideas and share info with them about their positions. Perhaps it can work the way Leadership Fellows one-on-ones do now. Geoffrey said Jonathan might get more people signing up than he expects, maybe 15 will want to meet with him. Jonathan said no problem – he gets value from it too.
