This interview was formatted as two 30 minute interviews with two different people. In my case, there was a VP of Finance, and someone from the Strategy side. Both asked pretty similar questions. The questions that stick out are: "If you are the CEO of Nordstrom, what are your three top priorities over the next year?" "What part of the finance department do you see yourself working in, and why?" "Lets say there is a department with declining profit margins. How would you go about analyzing the underlying cause of the declining profit margins?" "Suppose you are given the choice between two locations in the same city for a new Nordstrom location. What information will you need to make the decision?" The interviewers were very nice, but expected great answers, so be prepared to answer a wide variety of questions ranging from your past experience to Nordstrom's future.

I was also asked about the financial leverage of the company and why they just issued more debt. Also, "our private label line is thinking about making a new line of dress shirt, how would you go about pricing them." Lots of situational questions.

I interviewed with two VPs over 1 hour, both interviews were fairly conversational. Some typical questions: "Walk me through your resume." "Why do you think that you would be a good candidate for this job?" "Why Wells Fargo?" "Which department do you see yourself working in?" "Name the financial statements and how they are related." "What are some typical valuation methods?" I was also given a list, consisting of (if I can remember correctly): Charisma, Knowledge of WF products, Listening Skills, Follow-through, and (drawing a blank, but I know there was at least one other). I was asked to rank these from most to least important and explain my reasoning. All in all, I would say that an interviewee should just know WF, know some basics of accounting, and be prepared to discuss his/her interest in the position.

it was mainly a fit / situational interview. They asked the typical "Why PWM", "Why Seattle", "Why Goldman" questions. Then I was asked to point out the strengths and weaknesses in my resume. "Why would you be good at this job?" "How would you go about sourcing new clients, since you are a transplant to the area?" Then they asked me to role play a sales pitch to the interviewer who acted as an individual who had just sold his company for $50MM cash. He definitely played the "tough guy" role during this part of the interview and pushed back on a lot of my ideas. Don't bring up any investment products or theories that you don't completely understand. When he asked what kinds of products GS offers, I started listing a bunch. He stopped me when I mentioned derivatives and asked me to explain what that meant. Every reply was followed by something like: "Ok, but I don't understand what that means. Can you explain that some more?" until I basically ran out of things to say about derivatives. Also, be sure that you are up to date with current events in business news and the general business and economic climate. There was a particular news story that I hadn't read in detail that he made sure to bring up and ask me details about (which was fun.) Make sure you do some practice interviews and know a lot about Goldman's business.

Why should we hire you?
If I tossed a coin and gave you $1 if it was heads, and you gave $.90 to me if it was tails, would you take the risk (aka: play the game)?
If I picked a number between 1-100 and gave you the chance to earn money off me for guessing the number correctly in the first 5 tries, would you do it? Would you play this game if after those 5 tries you had to pay me money?

So,the bottom line, or maybe lines :) -
1.Know the company inside out.
2.Have good Queastions(Do not ask stuff which you can google & find out. Questions like–What are the qualities of your most successful Product manager?What does it take to become one?If I get an internship would you like me to take some specific course/do some prep work?, Some personal questions about the interviewer, Questions that show you have read about them etc)
3.Make some suggestions if you have any.
4.During the interview try to show you have read up on them; like– When the interviewer mentioned “Recently we acquired a company in UK..” I said “Oh! You mean XYZ company”.They need to know you are interested in them & are not just there to try your luck.
5.Body Language–confident, perked up, all excited (do not overdo though:)) & smiling.
6.Show them you are not just a good fit but you are the BEST fit.
7.Know your resume well for the personal interview so that you have responses ready when they ask questions like–when did you display quantitative skills, leadership skills etc.You can also have experiences outside of your resume but try to make it experiences from your work life as opposed to school life as much as possible.

For more specific questions please feel free to accost me whenever you spot me :) I hope this helps.I know most of this might be obvious to quite a few,but for me,this being my first interview in the U.S,it was a huge learning experience.I hope I am of some help to the few who are in the same boat as me!

ONE-ON-ONE-I met with Marcy again the morning of my interview.We had planned on a mock but we shelved the idea. NEVER do a mock on the same day as your actual interview. It will mess you up(let's say"might" :) ). So,I had a casual conversation with her. Went through a couple of behavioral Qs. The one extra thing I did for the personal interview was- I researched their web sites,competitor web sites,acquired company web sites thoroughly & had a few questions for them & suggestions as well.I made sure I asked each of these during the course of my 2 hour interview with 4 people. Remember to look motivated, interested and excited even if you think otherwise. :) Always be on your feet & if you have no idea about something please confess. Do not try to cover up,they WILL KNOW.

I had a phone interview and a one-on-one with RealNetworks. My notes on the same-
The one thing I learnt as being the most important was/is- LEARN ALL YOU CAN ABOUT THE COMPANY!No matter whatever else you do,this is totally indispensable.I had one meeting with Marcy(BCC)before my phone interview & one before my one-on-one.I spent all my time & energy in reading/googling all I could about Real.Took notes as & when I learnt/read new stuff.
THE PHONE-It is key to convey your emotions across the phone as they can only hear you & not see you smiling/frowning,sound extremely motivated & excited. For my phone interview, I had 6 sheets of paper set in front of me–company info,latest news about them, acquisitions, products, my resume & key points from the “Marcy” meeting, on how to conduct oneself during a phone interview. Remember they should never hear the ruffle of paper on the phone, be very careful. Have bulletized reasons as to why you are a GOOD MATCH. Make it short and sweet. The attention span on the phone is very less & unless you make it sound interesting you can be sure they are not listening beyond 60 seconds. Try to have 1-2-3 points for the common questions like–your achievements, failure, why you?, why us?,etc. For me,it was primarily a resume walkthrough & most importantly proving that talking to them made sense to my career path & why it was important to me.

Here are my notes from the interview.
1) Know the company. Spend a few hours getting to know the company. What is their strategy, were have they come from, sales/revenues, recent acquisitions/sales, reason your merge well with their culture.
2) Know the Interviewer. Suzanna had a profile on Linked in and some videos on YouTube.
3) Read up on Extreme Blue. Know what products they have developed that interest you.
IBM Extreme Blue is looking to place particular people in various projects. They are very specific about who can fit into the various projects and Suzanna is the primary gatekeeper (unlike a lot of interviews where the HR person is more of a filter).
IBM is looking for people passionate about technology, the ability to drive towards goals, can commercialize a product, work well in a collaborative environment and will stay with IBM. During the interview, Suzanna kept coming back specific projects and why I thought I would be a good fit.
Strategies that were helpful based on feedback from the BCC:
1) From the start of the interview, when you are talking about your history, keep tying back to IBM. If you can convince the interviewer that you understand IBM, have done your homework and are a good fit, then you can spend more time showing why your are the right person for the position and talking about Extreme Blue.
2) Mock interview
3) Pass on any advice to your fellow students before there interview. Claudia gave me some hints before I went into the interview that helped out. I tried to pass this onto fellow student.
4) At the end of the interview, make sure you talk about why you are a good fit. This is a great chance to match yourself to specific projects that interest you.

I think it's a great idea! As a tentative first step in publicizing the wiki, we sent out a link to it in the most recent MBAA newsletter. Once we get more content in here, we can start publicizing the wiki more directly. And yes, I think all students should have the opportunity to join the wiki and contribute.
